12 Days of Rotoff: Tiger Woods

Thursday, January 3rd, 2008

We are hours away from the start of the 2008 PGA Tour season.  In honor of the new year,  Shlink Lincoln Sports is counting down the Top 12 SLS Ranked golfers with the 12 Days of Rotoff.   Who will be #1?  (Who could it be?).  Drum roll please………………….

#1

Tiger Woods

 Tiger Woods

There is no other player as dominant in any other (fantasy) sport than Tiger Woods.  Quite simply Tiger is the reason my Rotoff Golf league went to an Auction format this season.  In standard snake Draft leagues the team that drafts Tiger has an unfair advantage on the rest of the field.

Tiger is best in all Rotoff stats (listed below) except for one.  His 16 Events Played in 2007 ranks T138 amongst the SLS Top 200 golfers.  Imagine how much more dominant Tiger would be if he played 20+ events every year.

Tiger has the best Rotoff Scoring Average, didn’t miss a Cut in 07, and his 7 Wins were worth a lot of Bonus Points.  The team that drafted Tiger in our first season of Rotoff Golf went on to win 2 Majors and the SLS Cup

The only real way to even the playing field in fantasy golf is with a Draft Auction.  The team that places the winning bid on Tiger will certainly compete, but will be spread a bit thin when Tiger is not in their lineup.  Expect to pay big for Tiger.  Based on the numbers I have him projected at 58.5 units, but to get Tiger for that much would be a steal.  He went for 69 units (out of 100 available for 10 golfers) in my Rotoff league auction

How much would you pay for Tiger?

Event Played:     16

Rotoff Scoring Average:     -11.26

Wins:     7

Total Bonus Points:     23

Top 10:     12

12 Days of Rotoff: Vijay Singh

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008

There are now less then two days until the start of the 2008 PGA Tour season.  In honor of the new year,  Shlink Lincoln Sports is counting down the Top 12 SLS Ranked golfers with the 12 Days of Rotoff.   Who will be #1?  (Who could it be?)

#2

Vijah Singh

 Vijay Singh

Vijay Singh is like a fine wine, he seems to get better with age.  2007 saw Vijay add two more PGA Tour wins to his total and a slew of Top 10 finishes.

Vijay is money in fantasy golf in just about any format because he plays all the time (26 Event Played last year) and he doesn’t miss a lot of cuts.  He only had 2 Cuts in 07 and only 2 in 2006.  So add that in with the fact that he has proven he can win just about any given week and you have fantasy golf consistency.  With that said you will probably see Phil go for more units then Vijay.  Take advantage of that.  Grab Vijay for 35-40 units and enjoy contending for your league championship.

Event Played:     26

Rotoff Scoring Average:     -8.61

Wins:     2

Total Bonus Points:     8

Top 10:     7

Cut/WD/DQ:     2

Units (of 100):     34.5

12 Days of Rotoff: Phil Mickelson

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

There are just three more days until the start of the 2008 PGA Tour season.  In honor of the new year,  Shlink Lincoln Sports is counting down the Top 12 SLS Ranked golfers with the 12 Days of Rotoff.   Who will be #1?  (Who could it be?)

#3

Phil Mickelson

 Phil Mickelson

Phil had a roller coaster year in 2007, from winning the Players to missing the cut at the U.S. Open.  At one point during the middle stretch of last season (after turning to Butch Harmon as his new swing coach) it looked like Phil was the best golfer in the world and then came the wrist injury while practicing at Oakmont.  This derailed his momentum a bit, but he still came back and won at the Deutsche Bank in what was one of the best events of the 2007 season.

Mickelson ranked 2nd in both Rotoff Scoring Average and Bonus Points and only missed 5 Cuts (most due to the wrist injury).  Phil’s only drawback is in the amount of tourments he plays, he had only 19 Events Played in 2007.  Even so he is sure to get you at least a few wins every year, maybe even a major win.  You will be paying top units for Mickelson, but he is worth it.  Don’t be suprised if he gets bid over 40, and don’t hesitate to pay over 40.   Phil is a monster, especially in Rotoff leagues.

Event Played:     19

Rotoff Scoring Average:     -9.37

Wins:     3

Total Bonus Points:     13

Top 10:     6

Cut/WD/DQ:     5

Units (of 100):     32.2

12 Days of Rotoff: K.J. Choi

Monday, December 31st, 2007

There are just four more days until the start of the 2008 PGA Tour season.  In honor of the new year,  Shlink Lincoln Sports is counting down the Top 12 SLS Ranked golfers with the 12 Days of Rotoff.   Who will be #1?  (Who could it be?)

#4

K.J. Choi

 K.J. Choi

K.J. Choi had a career year in 2007, getting wins at The Memorial and the AT&T National.  It will be hard for him to better that this season, but K.J. is always a threat to win on the PGA Tour.

Choi had 24 Events Played last year, which is 3rd amongst Top 10 SLS Ranked golfers (only Vijay and Snedeker played more).  It might be a wise stragety to let everyone else bid up the “household name” golfers, and then snag Choi late for a bargain price.  Expect to pay 30-35 units for Choi but keep him in mind as a sort of “sleeper” if the other top golfers come off the board early.  If that is the case you may be able to get him for 20-25 units.

Event Played:     24

Rotoff Scoring Average:     -7.57

Wins:     2

Total Bonus Points:     8

Top 10:     9

Cut/WD/DQ:     7

Units (of 100):     30.8

12 Days of Rotoff: Jim Furyk

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

There are just five more days until the start of the 2008 PGA Tour season.  In honor of the new year,  Shlink Lincoln Sports is counting down the Top 12 SLS Ranked golfers with the 12 Days of Rotoff.   Who will be #1?  (Who could it be?)

#5

Jim Furyk

 Jim Furyk

Jim Furyk is a golf machine.  He was 3rd in Top 10’s, 4th in Bonus Points and only had 3 Cuts.  His Rotoff Scoring Average (-8.11) ranks 9th amongst all golfers who played in ten or more tournamets in 2007.

Furyk was close to winning his second U.S. Open last season finishing T2, and also played well at Augusta and Carnoustie.  If Furyk can breakthrough with a major win in 2008 he is well worth the price.  Now that we are into the Top 5 you can expect prices to get inflated a bit.  Pay anywhere between 30-40 units for Furyk and expect to contend in a few majors this season in Rotoff leagues.

Event Played:     22

Rotoff Scoring Average:     -8.11

Wins:     1

Total Bonus Points:     11

Top 10:     9

Cut/WD/DQ:     5

Units (of 100):     30.2

Tomorrow I will be breaking down the #4 SLS Ranked golfer to get you ready for your fantasy golf draft.
