Fantasy Golf Picks

I’m giving myself points for picking winners.  Hopefully my picks can help you win your fantasy golf league this season.  My goal is to get to 111 points for the season, or the equivlant of picking a Top 3 finisher or better each week.

Winner = 10 points

2nd Place = 5 points

3rd Place = 3 points

Top 10 = 1 point

2009 Fantasy Golf Picks Total:  39 Points

2009 Fantasy Golf Picks Weekly Average:  2.29 Points

Last week:

What a Sunday.  The front 9 of the Players was entertaining TV as just about everyone who touched or got near the lead faltered.  All except for Henrik Stenson who put together a brilliant bogey free 66 to win by four shots.  Believe it or not it was their best Sunday rating in five years.  Stenson joins a very elite company as only the third player to win a Players Championship and a WGC event (his only two wins on the PGA Tour).  Can you name the other two?*

Phil never got close and his roller coaster season continues.  Goosen took a brief lead on Sunday but went +4 on the last six holes, falling back to a T22 finish.  Boo played well in the first two rounds but hurt his shoulder in the final round and had to withdraw.  My two week streak (say that ten times fast) comes to an end.

This week:

A rather unimpressive field gathers in Texas this week for the Texas Valero Open, making it’s first appearance on the PGA Tour regular season schedule since 2006.  Only one golfer ranked in the World Top 20 is in attendance (Anthony Kim).  Zach Johnson won this event last October during the Fall Series with a total score -19.

It will be interesting to see how this course plays in early spring, though scoring should still be low.  Expect a good ole fashion Texas shootout.

1. John Mallinger

Mallinger is getting to be a more and more recognizable name.  Seems I’ve seen his name at the top of a few Leaderboards this season.  He finished T6 at the Shell Houston Open a few weeks back and got his second Top 10 of the season last weekend with a T3 at the Players.  That leaves Mallinger’s 2009 state of Texas Top 10 percentage (SOTTTP) at 100%.  It’s hard to ignore that glaring stat this week.  Seriously though Mallinger is playing well and finished 15th in his only appearance here in 2007.  There’s a 60% chance that his SOTTTP stays at 100% by week’s end.

 2. Chad Campbell

A Texas native, Chad Campbell should play well this week.  He has never missed the cut here in five starts, though he has yet to finish in the Top 10.  Campbell’s best finish was T15 in 2007, shooting three rounds in the 60s.  Cambell has flirted with a few wins this year, most notably at the Masters, and will have extra motivation to do so this week in his home state.  Anything less than a Top 10 will be disappointing for him and for you if you go with Campbell this week.

3. Chris DiMarco

DiMarco, once a staple at the top of the World rankings, has fallen off the map over the last few years with only two Top 10s since 2007.  Very much a sleeper pick, Chris has a good opportunity to shine this week in a weaker field.   He did finish T19 here last season so a Top 10 is not out of the question.
