Another year, another PGA Tour season in the books.  It was a bit of a swan song for golf, with some rising stars finally rising and the big names still winning (all except for Mr. Woods).  Congrats to our Fantasy Golf Picks winner Eric McClung who won with 106 total points in 34 weeks.  Not only does Eric win a lifetime commish membership at the soon to be launched Rotoff.com, but he also wins a cool $20 cash prize for his golf prognostication.   Excellent work Mr. McClung.  Check’s in the mail.

I went out with a bang, getting 5 points for Luke Donald’s 2nd place finish.  It was dissappointing that Phil Mickelson was never in contention but it was still a monumental year for Lefty. Robert Allenby had flashes but couldn’t crack 60 all week.  Oh well.  I’ll take my 5th place finish amongst all the great fantasy golf pickers from this season.

Fantasy Golf Picks

McClung stretches the lead with just one event left.  Getting 3 points for Matt Kuchar’s T3 finish and 1 point for Steve Stricker’s Top 10, it’s the third weekly win for McClung this year.  It appears the mighty McClung may have this contest wrapped up, with #2 Brad 10 points back.  But I’m sure Brad will bring his A game this week.

Beat the Expert Leaderboard

Last Week (well actually two weeks ago}:

Shutout again.   No points for Camilo Villegas, Tim Clark or Tiger Woods.  It’s a familiar spot for me this year, almost 40 points shy of my total of last season.  Of course it helped that Tiger was good for a few guaranteed wins in 2009.  The downfall of Tiger put a damper on my golf prognostication.

But it sure made for a hell of a golf season.  And now it comes to a close.  From Phil Mickelson’s amazing weekend run at Augusta, to Rory McIlroy’s 62 on Sunday, Dustin Johnson collapse in San Diego and then in Wisconsin and his subsequent bounce back just two weeks ago.  It was a season of familiar winners, including Stuart Appleby getting back to Kapalua for 2011.  There were 59s (two actually) and a few final round major 80s. 

Amid all the drama another drama played out all season on and off the courses.  And ultimately golf fans will remember 2010 as the first year Tiger Woods did not win on the PGA Tour.  It was the first time in almost a decade that Tiger was not the Vegas favorite to win a tournament for which he was in the field.  So many firsts for Tiger in 2010, and as I’ve hinted in previous posts this can only be a good thing for golf, golf fans and the PGA Tour.  Tiger won’t be around forever.  It’s time the tour learned to survive (thrive?) with new faces.

Which takes us to Atlana and the final stop on the FedEx Cup tour.  East Lake is host to the 30 man field event at the Tour Championship.  Only a handful of golfers can clinch the FedEx Cup title with a win, but it’s certain to be entertaining down to the last shot on Sunday.

1.  Phil Mickelson

Hollywood could not write a better script.  Long written off after struggling all summer, Phily Mick could win not only his first FedEx Cup title this Sunday, but it would also put him #1 in the World for the first time ever.  Phil is defending champ this week and has four career Top 10s including another win back in 2000.  Just when we write him off he does something to amaze us.  I’m hoping Phil has saved the best for last, even if he will need some help from those infront of him to hoist the FedEx Cup.

2.  Luke Donald

You’d think this late in the season the only thing on Mr. Donald’s mind would be the Ryder Cup.  But don’t look now, a Brit could actually win the FedEx Cup.  Currently 7th on the FedEx Cup list, he’ll need a little help but it’s not impossible.  Donald has been solid in the playoffs, including a T2 finsih earlier this month.  With one Top 10 at East Lake in three career starts, expect Sir Luke to contend all weekend long.

3.  Robert Allenby

More of a sleeper pick but something tells me Robert Allenby will suprise us this week.  Allenby has six career starts here never finishing better then T11.  At 27th on the FedEx Cup points list he has no shot to win the title, yet I see him in my crystal ball atop the Leaderboard on Sunday.

Cal gets it done yet again this season, with his 3rd weekly win on five points for Luke Donald’s T2 finish, and has a real shot to finish in that elusive 3rd spot on the BTE LB.  Excellent!

I want to take a moment to thank all my BTE boys.  You guys have kept me motivated through a hectic and busy year, from emails, to facebook to linkedin, it’s really awesome to see you guys keep up with this contest.  I’m only sorry I couldn’t give it my all lately.  But some very great things are on the horizon for next year.  You guys rock and I won’t forget it!
