Last Week:
Last week was a dud. Donald didn’t get to the weekend while Els and Sabbatini tanked it in the final round. Both were flirting with a Top 10 finish through 54 holes. Ernie managed to shoot -4 on Sunday for a T12 but that doesn’t help me in the points department. Sabbatini disappeared and settled for a T39 finish. Ouch.
This week:
Time for some honesty. This is one of the hardest tournaments of the season to pick. Four different courses spread over five days, it’s a birdie fest for sure. The right course combination on the right days (wind and weather is also always a factor) goes along way to determining the contenders. So there is a little luck of the draw involved. Be weary of what courses (and when) your players are playing this week and adjust your lineup accordingly. Here are the 2010 pairings and tee times. Scores are going to be low as last year’s winner Pat Perez shot a ridiculous -33. Expect more of the same outside of sideways rain.
Edit to add: It looks like through the first round that the Nicklaus Course is playing by far the easiest with the Palmer Course 2nd easiest and (DOH!)…….Silver Rock is definately playing the hardest. Weather looks good through round 1, but rain and high winds this weekend could be brutal starting mid round 2. So plan accordingly.
Historically La Quinta has played the hardest of the four courses with SilverRock being the easiest (and the two PGA courses somewhere in between) but keep an eye on that swirling desert wind. With that said I’m going with a few hot hands and hoping they can take advantage of their scoring opportunites this week:
1. Charles Howell III
Howell only has four starts here with two missed cuts and one Top 10 (T6 way back in 2002). But Charles in Charge shot 66-66-64 in his last three rounds at last week’s Sony Open. With his putting in tow, this is a great chance for Howell to go low. Say that III times fast.
2. Justin Rose
If you’re only as good as your last round then this week Rose should be good. Just like Howell, Justin shot a final round 64 last Sunday finishing just outside the Top 10. It was a roller coaster round about for Rose who shot 72-65-71-64. If he can get out to a hot start on the easiest course (he starts on SilverRock) watch out. Though he has not played here since 2007, Rose has two Top 10s in three starts, finshing no worse then T29.
3. Tim Clark
Will 2010 be the year that Timmy gets his first PGA Tour win? He played decent last week in finishing T25 but never shot lower then 67. With a T5 finish here last season and a T2 in 2005, Clark knows his way around these courses and I expect him to contend all week long. I’ll go on record and say Clark gets his first win this year, maybe even this week.
