Last Week

My top Y! A-List pick, Steve Marino, contended for the win while Justin Rose and Chad Campbell each finished T13. Robert Allenby and Charles Howell III looked like safe picks but did not see the weekend.

This Week

The unique setup of this week’s Bob Hope Classic, five rounds over four different courses, offers fantasy owners one extra round to collect points, but a mediocre field in which to work with. Keep in mind that lineups will need to be submitted a day earlier.

Ryan Moore

In four Bob Hope starts, Moore has a top five, a top 10 and two MCs. The one-time amateur sensation is seeing his first action of 2011. Moore finished off last year with two top-five performances and streak of three top 10s. Bumped to the Y! C-List, Moore warrants a cheap seat on your roster.

John Senden

Of players with four or more BHC starts, Senden’s average finish of 25.0 is fourth among this week’s field. Since 2008, he’s only shot one round over 70 in a combined 15 frames of action. Senden is gaining steam, coming off last week’s T20 and four finishes of 12th or better in five fall tournaments.

Brian Gay

With a tournament-best 64 last Sunday, Gay is playing well enough to add another career-best BHC finish. Gay has not missed the cut here since 2005, finished T19 in 2009 and T15 a year ago. With only nine Y! A-Listers to choose from, Kuchar and Gay should go one-two.

Kevin Streelman

After shooting a combined 17-under in rounds three and four of last year’s event, Streelman is a top low-end option. In each of his three fall events, Streelman finished 16th or better. Going back to August, Streelman finished T3 in The Barclays, highlighted by a tournament-best round of 63.

Alex Prugh

In 2010, all three of Prugh’s top-10 finishes came in his first four starts, the best of which was fifth in the BHC. In addition to a runner-up result in the Fall Series, Prugh finished T20 in last week’s Sony Open.

Must Starts

Matt Kuchar: Picking up exactly where he left off, leaves Hawaii with finishes of T6 and T5.

Tim Clark: T2 last week. T2 in ‘10 BHC, T5 ‘08, T2 ‘05. UPDATE: Clark has withdrawn due to blisters on his feet. Replace him with D.J. Trahan: Three straight BHC finishes of 14th or better, including ‘08 win.

Bill Haas: ’10 BHC winner, sub-70 rounds in three straight years.

Last Week:

Last week was a dud.   Donald didn’t get to the weekend while Els and Sabbatini tanked it in the final round.  Both were flirting with a Top 10 finish through 54 holes.  Ernie managed to shoot -4 on Sunday for a T12 but that doesn’t help me in the points department.  Sabbatini disappeared and settled for a T39 finish.  Ouch.

This week:

Time for some honesty.  This is one of the hardest tournaments of the season to pick.  Four different courses spread over five days, it’s a birdie fest for sure.  The right course combination on the right days (wind and weather is also always a factor) goes along way to determining the contenders.  So there is a little luck of the draw involved.  Be weary of what courses (and when) your players are playing this week and adjust your lineup accordingly.  Here are the 2010 pairings and tee times.  Scores are going to be low as last year’s winner Pat Perez shot a ridiculous -33.  Expect more of the same outside of sideways rain.

Edit to add:  It looks like through the first round that the Nicklaus Course is playing by far the easiest with the Palmer Course 2nd easiest and (DOH!)…….Silver Rock is definately playing the hardest.  Weather looks good through round 1, but rain and high winds this weekend could be brutal starting mid round 2.  So plan accordingly.

Historically La Quinta has played the hardest of the four courses with SilverRock being the easiest (and the two PGA courses somewhere in between) but keep an eye on that swirling desert wind.  With that said I’m going with a few hot hands and hoping they can take advantage of their scoring opportunites this week:

1. Charles Howell III

Howell only has four starts here with two missed cuts and one Top 10 (T6 way back in 2002).  But Charles in Charge shot 66-66-64 in his last three rounds at last week’s Sony Open.  With his putting in tow, this is a great chance for Howell to go low.  Say that III times fast.

 2. Justin Rose

If you’re only as good as your last round then this week Rose should be good.  Just like Howell, Justin shot a final round 64 last Sunday finishing just outside the Top 10.  It was a roller coaster round about for Rose who shot 72-65-71-64.  If he can get out to a hot start on the easiest course (he starts on SilverRock) watch out.  Though he has not played here since 2007, Rose has two Top 10s in three starts, finshing no worse then T29.

3. Tim Clark

Will 2010 be the year that Timmy gets his first PGA Tour win?  He played decent last week in finishing T25 but never shot lower then 67.  With a T5 finish here last season and a T2 in 2005, Clark knows his way around these courses and I expect him to contend all week long.  I’ll go on record and say Clark gets his first win this year, maybe even this week.

2009 Fantasy Golf Preview Total:  16 Points

2009 Fantasy Golf Preview Weekly Average:  8.0 Points

Last week:

My best week on the young season picking the winner in Zach Johnson and getting a point for Charles Howell III’s Top 10.  Even Ogilvy was in the mix until a collapse on Sunday.

 This week:

1. Justin Leonard

Leonard won this event in 2005 and finished 2nd here last year.  Justin did not play the Sony last week but did finish 5th at the Mercedes-Benz Championship.  A Top 10 this week should be a shoe in for the 23rd World Ranked golfer.

2. Chez Reavie

Going off the radar again this week.  Reavie only has one start here, a T5 finish last season.  With two Top 25 finishes in two starts this year it’s safe to say that he is playing good golf.  Look for good golf to be great golf this weekend.

3. Bill Haas

Bill Haas got a Top 10 finish last week which bodes well for this week.  Just look at Haas’ finishes at the Bob Hope over the last four years:

T16, T27, T19 and T34

Not spectacular but consistent. Don’t count on Haas missing the cut this week and another Top 10 is more than likely.
