Last Week
At 42 years of age, Northern Ireland native Darren Clarke claimed his first major last week at the Open Championship. Two Americans, Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson, pressed hard in the final round at Royal St George’s Golf Club, but ultimately stalled out before seriously threatening for the lead. Crazy weather derailed numerous hopefuls along the way, leaving just four players to finish the tournament better than par.
Ouch. The weekly picks took a beating. Two players that most believed would challenge for the Claret Jug, Lee Westwood and my Must Start Luke Donald, both missed the cut. Fredrik Jacobson and Webb Simpson each finished T16. Jeff Overton struggled mightily on Saturday but finished T38. Retief Goosen, who appeared to be the rebound over his last several events, withdrew before the start of the second round with a back injury.
This Week’s Fantasy Golf Picks
Luke Donald
After seven straight top-10 finishes in Tour events, Donald finished T45 in the U.S. Open Championship prior to missing the cut last week at the British Open. However, the No. 1 player in the world finished third in this event a year ago when it was hosted at St. George’s Golf and Country Club. Donald ranks third in scoring, fourth in strokes gained – putting, fifth in birdies and 17th in All-Around Ranking.
Matt Kuchar – Must Start
The last time Shaughnessy Golf & Country Club hosted the Canadian Open was back in 2005, Kuchar finished T14. He also missed the cut last week which ended a streak of four consecutive top-16 finishes. A year ago, Kuchar earned a share of fourth in this event. He currently ranks sixth in scoring and third in All-Around.
Charl Schwartzel
Since winning the Masters, Schwartzel has finished 26th or better in four straight Tour events, including T9 in the U.S. Open and T16th in the British. The South African has made all nine cuts this season with four finishes of 16th or better. On Tour, Schwartzel is seventh in scoring and 18th in All-Around.
Ryan Moore
In 2005, Moore finished T2 in the Canadian Open at Shaughnessy, never finishing over par in any of his four rounds. After missing the cut in the U.S. Open, he’s finished T2 at the Travelers Championship, T68 at the AT&T National and T28 last week at the British Open. Moore currently ranks 20th in strokes gained – putting and 40th in scoring.
Bo Van Pelt
Prior to finishing T57 at the British Open, Van Pelt rattled off five consecutive results of 14th or better. He ranks fifth in total driving, 13th in eagles and 10th in All-Around. BVP hasn’t been challenge for wins but is a safe, reliable option to round out your roster.
Rickie Fowler
Over his last seven starts, Fowler has finished 22nd or better on five occasions. This run has been highlighted by a T5 last week at the British Open, his best finish of the season. Fowler ranks fourth in birdies in addition to 15th in both driving distance and All-Around.
