Fantasy Golf Picks

I’m giving myself points for picking winners.  Hopefully my picks can help you win your fantasy golf league this season.  My goal is to get to 111 points for the season, or the equivlant of picking a Top 3 finisher or better each week, based on the point scale below:

Winner = 10 points (20 for majors)

2nd Place = 5 points (10 for majors)

3rd Place = 3 points (6 for majors)

Top 10 = 1 point (2 for majors)

Last Week:   That was fun.  Though it wasn’t the finish I was looking for, it was still great none the less.  I was happy for Bubba to get his first major and first Masters.  Awesome shot out ot the rough to cap an awesome week.

My picks were ok.  I got 3 points for Phil’s T3 finish but Tiger (T40) and Rory (T40) stunk it up.  It was really shocking too see them both falter on the weekend and quite frankly I expected so much better.  Oh well.

Props to Crazy Steve who picked the winner in Watson and gets his 3rd weekly win of the year.  Everyone scored points this week and the positions on the leaderboard did not change, though Steve did gain points on the field.   Because it wasn’t made very clear I’m giving Bill R. 5 points for his sleeper pick of Oosthuizen even though he is inside the World Top 50.  I did not give him points for his sleeper pick of Kucher.  I think that’s fair.

This Week:   Sorry all.  I’m mailing it in this week.  Between preparing for the launch of our new site (Rotoff.com), day jobs and just plain ole life, there’s just not enough hours in the day.  Good field at RBC so should be fun.  Hilton Head golf is always such a beautiful watch on TV.  Due to the late posting feel free to post your picks into Thursday morning.  Here’s who I like this week:

Last Week

Strong winds at TPC San Antonio resulted in the highest scoring average (73.665) on Tour this season. Rookie Brendan Steele maintained the one stroke lead he entered Sunday with to edge out fellow rookie Kevin Chappell and veteran Charley Hoffman for the Valero Texas Open. With Charl Schwartzel winning the Masters, this marks the first time since 2002 that rookies have won back-to-back tournaments on TOUR.

The picks from last week were among my best over the last few tournaments, thanks to four players finishing 23rd or better. Fredrik Jacobson, a personal favorite, finished with a share of fifth to give him three straight top-five finishes in the Texas Open. My Must Start, Martin Laird, entered the weekend 2-over but recovered nicely to finish T9. A pair of Australians, Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy, finished T23. J.J. Henry had share of the lead after the first round, but was 13-over the rest of the way plummeting to T66. Angel Cabrera missed the cut.

This Week

The Heritage has been played on the Harbour Town Golf Links at Sea Pines Resort in Hilton Head Island, S.C. since 1969. The course is considered a modern classic because of the innovative design elements introduced to the golfing world by renowned course designer Pete Dye. The signature 18th hole features a backdrop of the now famous red and white lighthouse.

Luke Donald – Must Start

Everything about Donald’s recent play and history on this course says he is easily the top selection among the field. Since winning the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship, Donald owns three more top-10s, including T4 at the Masters. In his last two Harbour Town starts, Donald has shot 10-under each time, finishing T3 and T2. He currently ranks first in putting and scoring averages.

Matt Kuchar

An uneven performance at the Masters left Kuchar with just his third finish outside of the top-10 in eight stroke play events this season. Since 2005, Kuchar owns three top-15s at Harbour Town in five starts. Don’t worry about his mediocre driving distance as this course feature many short holes. Currently second in All-Around Ranking, Kuchar warrants a roster spot nearly every time out.

Jim Furyk

In addition to capturing the plaid jacket last year, Furyk has three other top-fives, including two runner-up performances, over his last six starts at Harbour Town. However, he missed two cuts in that span. Prior to finishing the Masters T24, Furyk had a pair of top-15 finishes in two previous starts. He’s something of a feast or famine selection, but strongly consider having Furyk available.

Rickie Fowler

After entering the weekend T7 in the Masters, Fowler tumbled to T38 after a pair of ugly rounds. He missed the cut here in his pro debut back in 2008, but Fowler returned a year ago to finish T8. He was second in greens, T9 in fairways and 11th in driving but T53 in putting. With Fowler sitting third in putting and 17th in birdies this year, a much bigger performance could be in store.

Aaron Baddeley

In this last five Harbour Town starts, Baddeley has not finished worse than 22nd. That impressive run includes a win from 2006, a top-10 the following year and T2 in 2008. Last year, Baddeley entered Sunday in position for another top-10 but made bogey five times on the back nine.

Webb Simpson

In his last seven starts this season, Simpson owns four finishes of 16th or better. After missing the cut in 2009, his first Harbour Town start, Simpson finished T14 a year ago. This season Simpson ranks sixth in birdies, ninth in scoring and ninth in All-Around.
