Last Week

Only six events into the Tour season, we’ve now seen half of them settled in a playoff. Mark Wilson captured his second win of the season, a day after his beloved Green Bay Packers captured their fourth Super Bowl title. The weather delays caused havoc for fans, players and fantasy lineups. The Yahoo! Sports Fantasy Golf deadline was not moved causing many to miss out on changes for the third round. Instead of Brandt Snedeker’s 5-under and Rickie Fowler’s 2-under I was stuck with players that missed the cut leaving me with two goose eggs.

Several of my featured picks had quick start, but ultimately faded. Phil Mickelson finished the weekend with two rounds of par. Dustin Johnson shot good bookend rounds of 64 and 67, but was uneven in the middle two. My Must Start, Bill Haas, began the tournament on fire with two rounds of 65 only to fall apart with a 5-over 76 in the final round. All three finished T29. Kevin Na, Jhonattan Vegas and David Toms each missed the cut.

This Week

The AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am mixes the professionals with amateurs and celebrities across three courses. The crown jewel is the Pebble Beach Golf Links, which also hosted last year’s U.S. Open. Spyglass Hill Golf Course is no slouch either and is consistently ranked among the best public courses to play. Last year, the classic Monterey Peninsula Country Club was placed back into the rotation.

Dustin Johnson – Must Start

In three Pebble Beach starts, Johnson has won each of the last two (one shortened by rain) and finished T7 in 2008. One of the biggest hitters on Tour, Johnson ranked first in driving distance in each of his victories. He’s also been successful hitting greens, finishing T2 and T3. DJ opened last week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open with a 7-under 64 to put him in second on the leaderboard, but followed it up with 2-over in the second round. Prior finishing T29 in that event, Johnson finished T9 and T3 to open the season. If you recall, Johnson appeared to have last year’s U.S. Open in hand, until imploding with nightmare final round of 82. Since 1937, no one has ever won this event three times in a row. I’m looking for DJ to pack an eraser and possibly rewrite the book.

Tim Clark

A blister on his left pinky toe caused Clark to back out of the Bob Hope Classic, but he’ll return this week to a site he’s seen success. In his last six Pebble Beach starts, the South African has four finishes of 12th or better. That level of play translated into the 2010 U.S. Open where Clark finished, you guessed it, T12. Two starts into this season, Clark ranks first in greens in regulation and eighth in driving accuracy.

J.B. Holmes

He’s as streaky as they come, but Holmes is certainly worth the risk this week. Coming off a T5 in last week’s Waste Management Phoenix Open, Holmes is heading to a site where he finished with a share of second place a year ago. In three prior starts at Pebble Beach, Holmes finished outside of 50th on two occasions and T16 in his first ever start at the site. Despite being something of a boom-or-bust player, Holmes missed only two cuts last year and warrants a spot on any roster this week.

Vijay Singh

In 16 career starts at Pebble Beach, Singh owns seven top-10 finishes, including a win in 2004 and a runner-up performance in 2008. Since that time, he’s missed a cut and finished T35 in the last two years. Coming off a T3 in the Waste Management Phoenix Open, Singh is worth a speculative addition to your squad in hopes the veteran stays hot.

Brandt Snedeker

In four career starts at Pebble Beach, Snedeker has yet to record a top-20 finish. However, he finished the 2010 U.S. Open with a split of eighth. Snedeker finished that event T4 in fairways and T8 in putting. After missing the cut at the Bob Hope Classic, Snedeker has reeled off back-to-back top 10s. After finishing first in putting average and putts per round a years ago, Snedeker’s putter is starting to heat up in 2011. The lack of success in this event could make Snedeker a major value.

D.A. Points

Over the last seven years, Points has missed the cut on three occasions in his four career starts at Pebble Beach. However, in 13 total rounds this season he’s gone over par just once with 11 sub-70 rounds. Points comes in with a fifth-place result and a T18th in his last two outings while sitting seventh in All-Around Ranking.
