Fantasy Golf Picks

I’m giving myself points for picking winners.  Hopefully my picks can help you win your fantasy golf league this season.  My goal is to get to 111 points for the season, or the equivlant of picking a Top 3 finisher or better each week, based on the point scale below:

Winner = 10 points (20 for majors)

2nd Place = 5 points (10 for majors)

3rd Place = 3 points (6 for majors)

Top 10 = 1 point (2 for majors)

Last Week:   It was a good week for me, with 5 points for McDowell’s 2nd place finish and a point for Bubba’s Top 10.  Furyk finished just outside the points at T11 (DOH!).  Even with my 6 points I lose ground.  Both Craig and Bill picked Tiger and each also had a Top 10 for 11 points.  No weekly winner again this week but the Fantasy Golf Picks Leaderboard is heating up.  Congrats to both Craig and Bill.  Craig remains 1st in total points.

I’m adding a new wrinkle into the points for the rest of the year.  Majors are worth double points (20 Win, 10 2nd, 6 3rd, 2 Top 10), that should make it interesting down the stretch.  And as in year’s past, everyone gets five picks for the majors.  More on that next week.

Oh man!  Is shit getting good or what?  Tiger (officially) back in the win column.  Rory, Donald, Phil, Strick, Mahan and Rose also with wins on the young year.   Florida swing over.  One more week until the Masters.  Oh man!

This Week:   Love him or hate him, Tiger is good for golf.  Ratings go up and to the fair-weather fan golf matters.  Suprisingly enough this week should grab good ratings even without Tiger.  The field is great with some of the top Euros getting one last preparation for Augusta.  Westwood and Schwartzel will play.  As well as two of my other picks.

The organizers of the Shell do their best to make Redstone GC as close to Augusta as possible, though don’t expect major like scores.  There are a lot of birdies to be had.  Phil shot -20 last year enroute to a three shot win.

Steve Stricker

Lee Westwood

Last Week:   Shane get’s er done again, getting his second weekly win of the young season.  The only one to pick the winner in Luke Donald, that’s 10 more points for Shane, though still sits 1 point behind our leader.  Excellent work my friend.

My point streak continues but I need to start getting more then just 1 point per week.  I got a Top 10 for Matt Kuchar but that was all.  Schwartzel missed the cut by a mile after a opening round 76.  Ouch.  I obviously missed the boat on Rose, who managed a T29 finish, but could not keep his roll rolling after the win at the Cadillac.  I should have known better.  All in all I’m not doing too bad, still in 3rd place, but need to build some momentum.

This Week:   The Florida Swing concludes this week at Bay Hill and can only mean one thing, Augusta is right around the corner.  The field is decent this week, with some names (Tiger, Phil, Sergio) but only two from the World Top 10.  Last year Martin Laird held on for a one shot victory over Steve Marino.  Don’t expect a lot of low scores, Bay Hill will be playing tough as golfers prepare for the first major of the season

Jim Furyk

Last Week:   Oh what could have been.  Keegan Bradley held the lead on Sunday, only to collapse on the back 9 (again) and finish T8.  I still get 1 point for the Top 10 but damn, that would have been huge for me.  We all know what happened to Mr. Woods, who withdrew on Sunday with a leg sprain, not that he was in contention.  Lee Westwood never recovered from a first round 76 and finished T29.  Another week with ponits is good, but oh what could have been.

Crazy Steve gets it done again, picking 2nd place Bubba and 3rd place Rory for 8 points on the week and his second weekly win of the year.  He also moved into 4th place on the leaderboard.  Nice pickin’ Steve!

It was fun to watch Rory over the weekend, who had some amazing streches of golf.  He flirted with a 59 on Saturday before a few blunders on the difficult finishing holes.  Even though Rory did not win he is in top form and is easily the favorite heading into Augusta.  More on WGC-Cadillac winner Justin Rose later.

This Week:  It won’t be the star fest of last week, but the Transistions still has some decent golfers in the field, including last week’s winner Justin Rose and World #2 Luke Donald.  Last year Gary Woodland beat Webb Simpson by one shot in a great final round.  Hopefully we get more Sunday drama this week.

Justin Rose

After last week’s stellar performance, Rose now has two PGA Tour wins in the last seven months.  It was his second straight Top 10 last week and I see no reason why he won’t keep up his great play into April.  Over the last five years Rose has finished in the Top 15 in all three of his starts at the Copperhead Course, with a T5 in 2011.  All signs point to GO for Justin this week.

Matt Kuchar

Seems Kuchar has been off the radar this season.  He certainly has not had the torrid start from a year ago (six Top 10s in his first eight starts) but Kuchar is a solid option this week.  Currently working on a two straight Top 10 streak, he has not played this event since 2009 but finished T12 that year.  With only three missed cuts in the last two years (yep, you read it right), Kuchar is about as consistent as they come and always a threat to win.  Start him with confidence and hope the Top 10 streak continues.

Charl Schwartzel

Sir Charl doesn’t play a full PGA Tour schedule but will no doubt be ramping up for his Masters title defense.  Schwartzel has two Top 5’s in his first three starts in 2012 and should be a top the leaderboard all week in a weaker field.  Aside from an opening round of 71 at the Honda and a 3rd round 70 last week, the rest of his rounds have all been in the 60s.  He makes his first start ever at the Transitions but is still a top option.

Last Week:   We have a new #1, both in the world and in the Fantasy Picks competition.  I’m sure you’ve heard by now that Rory McIlroy is the new world #1, but you heard this here first, Graig takes back the #1 spot in the Fantasy Picks competion!

Big props to Dave who got his first weekly win and moved up to 4th on the LB.  Dave not only picked the winner in Rory (10 points) but also got 5 points for Tiger’s 2nd place.  Lots of points scored last week as five people had Rory in their picks, including myself.  Though Furyk missed the cut and Allenby was inconsistent (T36), I’m happy to keep my 3rd place position in the standings.  I’m still within driving distance of the leaders.

(I saw a few post that they thought their points were wrong, I went through and added them up again and everyone seems right.  However if you still feel your points are wrong please contact me through the contact link at the bottom of the page.  Thanks)

This Week:  Damn, it’s good to be a golf fan these days.  A new #1, Tiger and Phil (the PGA Player of the Month) in top form and Augusta right around the corner.  Not to mention the countless young guns that contend each and every week.   This week should be another must see event.  How about a Westwood/Rory final pairing?  Or Tiger/Phil?  Or Tiger/Rory?  Maybe Phil/Westwood?  That said I probably just jinxed the final round, expect Robert Rock and K.T. Kim  to battle on Sunday.

Remember, no cut this week and a small but strong field.

Tiger Woods

He’s (almost) baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaack.  Tiger’s final round 62 last Sunday was nothing less than brilliant and could have been even better if not for a few short birdie misses.  So is Tiger back?  Not even close, but remember this, since 2005 on his next three courses (Doral, Bay Hill and Augusta) Tiger has 6 wins in 18 starts and never finished outside the Top 25.  Last week was a good sign of things to come and expect those “things to come” to arrive this week, putter permitting.

Keegan Bradley

Sitting at 10th on the Money List, Keegan B. is fast becoming a fantasy golf force.  He plays a full schedule and so far in 2012 has finished no worse then T22 with a 2nd place finish at the Northern Trust.  He is coming off a T12 last week and was in contention until the back nine on Sunday (shot a final round 73).  Keegan makes his first start at Doral this week but has the distance to be a factor.  Much the same as Tiger, if he can find his putting stroke he could be lights out (currently ranks T67 in Putts per Round).

Lee Westwood

Overshadowed by Tiger’s Sunday run, Westwood also put together an impressive bogey free 63 himself and finished T4 at the Honda (after a 4th place finish in Match Play).  Westwood is always hard to pick in fantasy, he’s always good for the majors but with a previously limited schedule it was hard to know when to start him.  Now that he’s a PGA Tour memeber again and will play at least 15 events in the states, play him when he’s hot.  Period.  It wouldn’t be a shock if Westwood gets in the win column in Miami this week but I’ll take a Top 10.
